Exercise programme for operated patients

What is it
It consists of set of eleven exercises for post CABG patients, which includes exercises for arms, legs and other joints of the body. It is a protocol for 3 months i.e post CABG patients have to do these sets of exercises for the next 3 months from the day of discharge.

Why is it done?
Exercise programme is conducted to prevent stiffness of joints in the body, improve circulation of blood, hasten up healing, and towards achieving overall mental and physical well-being.

When is it done?
After CABG, on the day of discharge.

How is it done?
These exercise are advised for first 3 months after the operation, twice daily. Keep a gap of 1 hour after meals. Rest for 3 minutes after every exercise. Do deep breathing exercise for 25 times after every exercise.

STANDING EXERCISES

         ARM EXERCISES

  1. Arms straight, touching the wall with fingers, raise arm upwards and downwards keeping the elbow straight. 10 times.
  2. Hands behind the head move elbows forward and backward. 10 times
  3. Clasp both palms and raise both arms up and down. 10 times
  4. With arms at your side and palm facing upwards, bend elbows until the hands touch the shoulders. 10 times
  5. Leg Exercises (Standing)
  6. Holding on to a sturdy object, move the leg forward and backward. Repeat with the other leg. 10 times.
  7. Holding on to a sturdy object, rotate each leg in small circles, keeping the knee straight. Repeat with the other leg. (Clockwise rotation). 10 times

    LYING DOWN EXERCISES
  8. Lie down flat (pillow under the calf muscles if the vein graft has been taken from the leg). Raise and fold knees, and then straighten legs again. 10 times

    SITTING EXERCISES

  9. Open and close palms. 15 times (only if the radial artery is grafted from that hand.)
  10. Sit straight on a stable chair. Hold your waist and turn sideways with neck rotation. 5 times
  11. Rotate neck sideways. 5 times
  12. Bend neck sideways. 5 times

PRECAUTIONS FOR 3 MONTHS
1. Support the chest incision with a pillow or towel while coughing, sneezing and laughing.
2. Do not lift weight more than 3 kgs.
3. Do not bend forward from waist, bend from knees to lift any object.

Physiotherapists are available in the OPD in rehablitation centre at Upper basement between 3.30 pm -4.30 pm on all working days.
