| Why is it done?
What defects require treatment?
Small atrial septal, ventricular septal and patent ductus arteriosus defects
tend to close spontaneously while large defects are unlikely to close and hence
need to be treated. Timely closure o f these lesions is immensely important
since if left untreated these can lead on to heart failure, poor weight gain,
recurrent chest infection and potential risk to life.
There are two types of surgeries for congenital heart defects,
- Palliative surgeries help the heart function more like normal but
do not fix the defect
- Corrective surgeries repair the defect.
- Non surgical Treatment:Many of the congenital defects can now be
repaired by Interventional Cardiologist in the Cath Lab using various devices.
