:: Radio diagnosis and Imaging

Radiology has become increasingly interventional, therapeutic as well as diagnostic & good coverage of these procedures is presented by internationally acknowledged practicing experts.

The department of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging is equipped with advanced state of the art 16 slice Somatom Sensation Cardiac CT scanner with optimized performance for cardiac & cardiovascular applications. The real value of this CT scan is its ability to provide a non – invasive means of examining internal body structures including heart & diagnosing disease. Our new multislice CT scanner allows very fast scanning ------- so fast, in fact that most scans can be performed in less than a minute. These subsecond scans can even capture images of the heart between beats & result in much improved image quality because of decreased patient motion. Our new scanner offers virtually unlimited isotropic volume acquisition with 16 simultaneously acquired slices & supports 0.37 sec/3600 rotation time for cardiac applications. With ECG gating and faster scanning CT coronary angiography is possible & because of its non-invasiveness, OPD basis & low cost of the procedure it is considered as ‘gate-keeper’ for the catheter coronary angiography. Full converge of coronary tree is acquired in a single breath hold. The major advantage over conventional angiography is the ability of visualize the coronary wall as well as the coronary lumen. Calcified & non-calcified atherosclerotic lesions can be visualized in the coronary wall. Coronary Calcium Scoring is an effective screening tool for detection of the earliest appearance of coronary artery disease & can be used as marker for progression of coronary atherosclerosis.

In addition to cardiac imaging, other applications of 16 slice CT include – motion free imaging of major mediastinal vessels, isotropic volume imaging of the thoracic & abdominal vasculature, submillimeter resolution studies of the carotid, cerebral & renal vessels in pure arterial phase, long range peripheral angiography, whole body angiography in many patients to diagnose or to exclude suspected vascular lesions ( e.g – aneurysm, dissection, thromboembolism etc.) with Real time MPR, 3-D reconstruction.

Body CT has supplanted or encroached upon other radiological procedures. Rapid, multiphasic contrast enhanced imaging for various organs systems such as Neuro, Chest, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, Gastrointestinal is also possible with virtual endoscopy, CT tracheobronchography, CT cholangiography & colonography.

CT bronchoscopy and colonoscopy allow us to have an endoscopic view distal to a lumen – obstructing lesion that cannot be bypassed by a conventional scope.

Other major advantages of MSCT are higher patient comfort – in the form of shorter and fewer breath holds in body imaging, avoiding awkward positioning for coronal imaging, minimizing sedation for pediatric patients. Critically ill patients can also be scanned much faster.

1.5 tesla Cardiovascular MR is another newer modality installed in the department for the non-invasive imaging of heart & great vessels. MR angiography is a non invasive method to evaluate the patency of blood vessels without resorting to invasive conventional X-ray angiography. MR digital substraction angiography ( MRDSA) is performed with intravenous injection of MR contrast in an arm vein. It can be performed in the neck (carotids), head, body, arm & body. In addition whole body MR imaging can also be performed with this scanner in a very short time.

General ultrasound is designed to keep pace with newer, advances & to cover all areas of ultrasound. The areas include abdominal ( liver, biliary, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, peritoneal and abdominal wall), retroperitoneum ( vascular, general, retroperitoneal, kidney & lower urinary tract), pelvis, musculoskeletal, breast, chest, neck, small parts & interventional chest & abdominal ultrasound. Color Doppler ultrasound scanner with convex, linear, sector, transcranial, pediatric & endocavitory, transducers is used to perform ultrasound.

For the conventional radiography & diagnostic procedures department has 800 MA set with image intersifier and seven portable X-ray machines.

To expedite developing & processing of the films, four automatic processors have been installed.
