:: Cardiac Surgery

With more than 3500 operations each year, this is one of the busiest cardiac surgical programmes in this part of the world. EHIRC has the unique distinction of being the only centre where apart from conventional adult and Pediatric surgery, advanced and innovative techniques are performed regularly keeping pace with the latest developments and providing leadership in many areas.
Some of the newer techniques available here are:

  • Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery This technique involves operating upon the coronary artery through a small 3-4 inch incision on the side of the chest. It encourages rapid recovery and leaves behind a very small scar.
    Valve surgery is also performed through this technique.
  • Port Access Surgery Commonly referred to as the "Key Hole Surgery", it is used for Valve replacement, CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) and some congenital heart defects. This institute has lead the way in this technique in India by performing the first successful port access surgery in 1997.
  • Total Arterial Revascularization in CABG to provide long-term patency of graft.
  • Surgery on the Beating Heart without the use of heart-lung machine.
  • Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization(TMLR)
    Other pioneering techniques being performed at EHIRC are Maze operations (for surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmia), Reduction Ventriculoplasty (Heart shrink surgery), Cardiomyoplasty to name a few.

The hospital is now moving into the field of Videoscopic and Robotic heart surgery. There are six state-of-the-art operation theatres managed by a team of highly trained surgeons and anesthesiologists. To support the operation theatres are six intensive care units providing critical care and constant monitoring for the post-operative patients. The hospital follows a well-laid out "Progressive Patient Care System", wherein the patient moves from one level of critical care to another depending upon the level of care required.
