Department of Cardiac Anaesthesia provides anaesthetic services to all types of cardiac surgery (Bypass, valve replacement / repair, Pediatric surgery) and vascular surgery. During the surgical procedure, anaesthesiologist is solely responsible for monitoring and optimising the function of the heart, in addition to providing anaesthetic and pain-relief services.

Post-operative pain relief is also taken care of by the anaesthesiologist. After cardiac surgery, patient is kept in the intensive care unit on respirator for 12-24 hours, which is managed by the anaesthesiologist.

The department provides resuscitation services to the whole institute and ambulance services for transferring sick patients from other hospitals / cities. The department also provides intensive care services (e.g. putting lines to monitor vital organ function, nutritional and respiratory care) to the medical patients admitted in heart command centre / CCU.

The department is very active academically and so far has published over 100 scientific papers in various national and international journals. The department has started two-year post-doctoral fellowship programme under National Board of Examinations.
